» Ad Sizes & Specifications

» Acceptable File Formats

Preferred: PDF/X-1a
Acceptable: Adobe® Illustrator .eps (version 8.0-CS)
Acceptable: Adobe® Photoshop .eps (version 6.0-CS)

» Platform Specifics

J Rations is produced in a Macintosh-based production facility. We do accept files and formats from PC machines as long as the programs used are industry standards. These programs include: Adobe® Photoshop (6.0—CS), Adobe® Illustrator (8.0—CS), Adobe® InDesign (2.0—CS) and QuarkXPress® (4.0—6).

» Content Proofs

A content proof should be submitted with every ad. All proofs must be at the ad’s correct size (100%) and include centered registration marks. All color ads should have a properly calibrated SWOP proof with color bar. To learn more about SWOP standards, see SWOP.org. Neither Outgate Media, Inc., nor J Rations will be responsible for inaccuracies in color when no SWOP-calibrated color content proof was provided.

» Fonts & Documents

All fonts should be embedded. Avoid the use of TrueType fonts. If TrueType fonts are necessary, convert them to outlines in Illustrator or another accepted graphics program and/or embed in PDF. Do not use font styles within a layout program; fonts must be in bold, condensed, italic, etc. and not applied as such by the program.

For all ads, your document size should match the exact ad space size specified. Any ads requiring modifications to fit space will incur additional production charges, no exceptions. Include all trim marks and any bleeds (at least 1/8-inch beyond actual trim) necessary. Bleed for ads smaller than full-page size should be built to incorporate bleeds for either a right- or left-hand page position. Not all ad sizes can bleed, see the the ad specifications chart for ads that will accept bleed parameters.

Spread ads should be built as such and included in the same document. Do not send spread ads as two separate pages.

Please send only one ad per PDF or EPS file. Name ads appropriately for ease of identification by the J Rations staff.

» Image Preparation

Images must be saved in CMYK color palette as TIFF or EPS format using binary encoding. No RGB images accepted.

The effective resolution of images should be 250–400 dpi. With a maximum ink coverage of no more than 300 percent.

Images should not contain any ICC profiles, transfer functions, halftone screens or any third-party utilities that could alter colors.

Clipping paths must be created as part of the Photoshop document, not in a graphic layout program.

Embed all images, do not use links. Fonts used with images must be converted to outlines or embedded within the EPS file. Do not nest EPS files within EPS files (double nesting).

Use only the CMYK color palette, no Pantone®, RGB or spot colors can be accepted.

» File Preparation

EPS files created in Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop should also be accompanied by an editable .AI (Illustrator) or .PSD (Photoshop) document as well.

Save all Illustrator EPS files as Process color, CMYK. Create outlines for all fonts and embed all images. Save compatibility to 8.0—CS. Preserve transparency if used, include thumbnails and check CMYK postscript to Level 2. Make sure ad space size is correct.

Save all Photshop EPS files at 300 dpi in CMYK mode and to the exact ad space size. Whenever possible include an editable .PSD file. Save Photoshop EPS files as Macintosh (8-bit) preview, binary encoding with the “Include Vector Data“ checked.
